Video spurs explosion of Internet traffic

Internet traffic will have increased six fold by 2012 in a five-year period as more users view and post videos online, delegates at an Internet forum heard on Wednesday.

From 2007 to 2012, "traffic will increase sixfold," Robert Pepper, a vice president of Cisco, told the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

"It's growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 46 percent and this is being driven by video," he said. "Video is the driver. Make no question about that."

Video overcomes barriers of language, local content and literacy, he said, allowing users to interact more easily with the Internet.

Pepper was addressing the IGF's fourth and final day at a "Preparing the Young Generations in the Digital Age: A Shared Responsibility" session, with Egypt's First Lady Suzanne Mubarak among those attending.

The Sharm el-Sheikh forum brought together more than 1,500 representatives of government, civil society, advocacy groups and the private sector from over 100 countries to discuss the future of the Internet.

The Best Band that You Likely haven't Heard.

The best band that you likely haven’t heard

This group can not be categorized. I’m sure that’s why the modern record industry has done nothing with their endless supply of talent. They are great recorded, they are even better live. Louisville’s own, Villebillies.

I highly recommend checking them out, and at some point my friends are going to ask me to shut the hell up already about the Villebillies. Well, they can go screw, because they have either listened and get why I push so hard, or they haven’t and they still need me to deliver the gospel. Maybe 2 or 3 have listened and passed on the idea. I don’t know who they are though, because no one has ever reported that back to me.

Below are the two latest videos they have out on the Villebillies YouTube Channel. You can find their music on iTunes, and I highly suggest you get over there and make some purchases. I don’t know of any greater modern era musical value than this group. If you’re luck enough to live in the Louisville area I highly suggest checking out a live show. If it’s not the best show I’ve seen, it’s the second best. Certainly the best ever in a small venue such as Headliners in Louisville.

Get on this people, and if you like it, please spread it to your friends.

What does Google Wave mean for the Auto Business?

I’m really, really, really, trying to wrap my head around this as the future. Email, Instant Messaging, real time (character by character) transparent conversation, file sharing. How can car dealers harness this to do business in the future?

The first thought is immediate contact with potential leads. Instead of receiving an email lead, putting together a proposal or form letter, you get a Wave. The Wave “hits” you, for lack of a better term. You are typing as instantly as a phone conversation, but the end user still can retain that “I’m really not talking to a salesperson” feeling they like about the internet.

Your Wave avatar means they already have associated you with a real live human. You can go through the sales process, what are their needs, drag and drop pictures and videos of various vehicles you have available. Drag and Drop pictures of the shiny new showroom or the amazing 8 Million Bay Service Department. Drag and Drop PDF’s of the Invoices if your dealership is into that thing.

The Internet Manager is going to have to have some power though. No running back and forth to the Desk Manager, this is all in real time. I think this will lead to more Internet Deals being made online and certainly drive more traffic to the dealership if handled correctly.

On the more creative side, dealers could create conferences with past customers, “Chat Room” experiences with training for your customers. Imagine a Jeep dealer that got its Wrangler Owners together online once a month to share video, pictures and good conversation about their outdoor experiences in their Jeeps. That’s a dealer that creates be back business in the service department, body shop and very likely vehicle purchase.

I’m curious to know anyone else’s thoughts on this new and innovative technology that most of us haven’t really seen in use yet….

Social Media experts, are they real?

I am going to say yes, but in no way claim to be one. I’ve never met one. I’ve Tweeted and Facebooked with a few, or I assume I have. The problem lies in the fact that most of us aren’t being paid to Tweet, Blog and Interactively Socially Interact with our customer base. In the Auto Retail business, most are there to sell. It’s taken many years for dealers to even accept that the Internet is a viable dedication of a persons undivided attention. Dealer Principles are beginning to accept it as a process of business, and most are dedicating departments and budgets to the internet. This is great stuff.

How do you integrate Social Media into that operation. The first step is education, it can be hard to overcome the thought process that Twitter and Facebook are for playing online. If that can be achieved the next step is to follow. Follow other dealerships, follow other Auto Industry people, follow other Social Marketing people. The goal is to pay attention to what they are doing, learn from others. That’s really the whole point of Social Media.

This is the first step in any hopes of developing a Social Media Marketing campaign, learn from others. Social Media is being developed by us, the users. While you may not be, or know, an “expert”, give it 5 or 6 months of learning and doing and you can be the expert.

The most important thing to realize about this new outlet is that everything we know today, will all be different come next spring. It’s a moving target, and it’s moving fast.
