GM and Ford and what I think they should do!

What I think should have been done with General Motors. It's a Car Guys prosepctive. This was recreated from an email I put together to share my opinions with someone who shared theirs with mine. I hope I have appropriately made it tranisition:

The last to go should have been Pontiac. GMC should have been first in line.

Chevrolet (compete with Ford and Toyota essentially the all around division)
Cadillac (compete with the high end, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, ect.)

Pontiac (Maintain is as a Sports Division, as they were back in the 60's) The G8 was a great car, the Solstice has tons of potential (yet the stupidest drop top design I've seen to date), lose the G3 and G5, those people can buy at Chevy. Revamp the Vibe with Toyota, create a legit Hot Hatch to compete with the Focus, STi, Evo, ect. Create a next level up Camaro SS and badge it the new Trans Am, but make it perform above the Camaro so as not to allow cross comepetition. Continue to import some great Austailian GM (Holden) vehicles to the states via Pontiac.

Pontiacs could be marketed through the current Saturn Dealer Points, which are set up in a more foriegn approach of non-over saturation.

Lose all the SUVs in the Pontiac Lineup. I think they just have the Torrent.

Kill Saturn, Hummer, Buick and first up GMC.

While I'm at it. Ford should kill the current entire Mercury lineup. All of them. Again, lose the SUVs, let Ford have those sales. Ford Austrailia makes some freaking amazing vehicles rear-wheel drive, V8s and Turbo 6's. They even market the Falcon over there are a Ute (think El Camino). This would be a great project for Mercury. Quit selling the same thing, with a different trim and badge on it.

All of this said, I'm a car guy. The death of the Car Guy mentality in Detroit is very upsetting to me. Fortunately BMW, Subaru and Mitsubishi are still committed to performance and functionality.
